ARTIST NOTES: Mactridae Medley captures the intricate beauty and diversity of South Australia's coastal life through the arrangement of Mactridae bivalve shells in varying forms—whole, crushed, and layered with sand. This piece invites viewers to consider the textures and tones that these natural materials present, from the smoothness of the intact shells to the fine, granular texture of crushed shells. Each shell, with its unique colour variations, mirrors the organic patterns found along the shoreline. The circular, meditative formations represent the rhythm of the ocean, a quiet ebb and flow that connects life above and below the water. This work is a tribute to the resilience and artistry of nature, encouraging a closer look at the often-overlooked beauty in the seemingly simple elements of the natural world.

ARTIST BIO

Ruby Donovan  - "artbyrd"

South Australian Artist

Ruby Donovan was born in South Australia  in 1971 and raised by  migrant parents in Adelaide.

She has a passion for the South Australian landscape and all that naturally occurs within it - be it from the rugged coastline flanked by the Great Southern Ocean  to the Arid Lands of the Flinders Ranges.

Her artwork reflects the continuous evolution of nature; she draws inspiration from the naturally occurring  colours and textures found in our local environment; from the Blues, Yellows and  Reds of the shells to the Whites, Greys and Browns of the leaves.

Ruby has an innate propensity for circular and curved shapes; as they evoke a feeling of gentleness, quietness  and calmness in which she then incorporates into her designs.

Ruby endeavour's to share the beauty of all that she feels and she's in the South Australian landscape with others.
